Since the turn of the century, plugin development has been dominated by a single idea: recreate the processing of hardware from the 1970s and 80s. Of course, these were tools that shaped the sound of classic records but they were engineered for studios that no longer represent how most music is made.

Music production has moved on and some tools haven't followed.

Today, professional engineers mix on headphones in untreated rooms. Deliverables are stems, not stereo masters. Sessions run on laptops as often as they run on dedicated workstations. The CLAP format has arrived with capabilities VST3 never had. And yet the dominant model in the plugin industry is still: emulate a console and require a hardware dongle to make it working.
